I have two extremely creative and brilliant daughters. Their imaginations are astounding. They love writing stories. They are both talented writers even at their young ages. 

They both share one problem though. Both of them struggle with spelling.

It took me a long time to find my spelling groove, so I haven't been too worried. However, as I was watching my daughter write one day I realized that her spelling issues may be more sound issues than spelling issues.

For example, even in third grade, she will spell with, wif. Suddenly, I realized that she was spelling it that way because that is how she was hearing it. She wasn't paying attention was she was told how to spell with because she already "knew" how to sound it out.

This realization led me to delve more deeply into phonics. What letter combinations make what sounds.

I then created discrete word lists for each rule. Everything was designed to be explicit, so students would be forced to think about the relationships between the letters and the sounds.

Plus, I was thinking about teachers too. I love a routine. It makes lesson planning so much easier. So, I created a spelling routine based on the word lists and sound rules. Teachers could focus on one rule a week and students would do the same things every week to learn the rules.

I also know that printing/copying is a big issue in most schools, so I wanted to keep the copies low. Each lesson only requires six pieces of paper for the entire class if you use stations as part of your literacy block.

I also thought back to my experience with spelling programs where it feels like the kids learn the same lessons year after year. In my program, I included every upper elementary phonics rule I could find. As of right now, that is 50 lessons. You can't possibly teach every rule in one school year. So, teachers can work with the grade levels above and below them to share the lessons and decrease overlap.

Here is how the program works:

Three pairs of partners work at the spelling station at a time. Each set of partners shares the lesson page.

Day One: Partners take turns reading the sample words aloud. This is important because spelling is linked to sound and kids need to be pronouncing the words correctly. After the students read the words, they will talk about why each word fits the lesson for the week.

Day Two: Partners copy down the spelling rules and sample words for the week. As they write the words, they break them into syllables and underline the spelling rule within each word.

Day Three: Partners give each other practice spelling tests using the sample words. Any misspelled words are corrected and spelled correctly five times.

Day Four: Partners work together to sort the sample words for the week using the sorting cards. Partners use what they have learned about the spelling rules to come up with more words to add to their notebooks.

Day Five: Without looking at their notebooks, students write a paragraph using at least five of the words they learned during the week. Each word should be underlined or highlighted.
