Rainforest Biomes

Biomes are areas on Earth with similar climates, animals, and plants. A rainforest biome is an area that gets a lot of rain. Rainforests get between 60 and 400 inches of rain every year.

There are two types of rainforest. A tropical rainforest is very warm. A temperate rainforest is much colder. Tropical rainforests are found around the equator. The biggest temperate rainforest is found in the Pacific Northwest of North America.

Many organisms live in temperate and tropical rainforests. Trees in a temperate rainforest are usually evergreen trees. These trees have needles, like Christmas trees, instead of leaves. When it gets cold in the winter, trees lose their leaves, but needles can stay on a tree all year round.

A tropical rainforest has hundreds of different kinds of trees. These trees have leaves because a tropical rainforest stays warm all year. The leaves will not fall off because it never gets cold. The trees in a tropical rainforest grow very tall so they can reach the sunlight. Trees need sunlight to grow just like people need food to grow.

Many animals live in a temperate rainforest. These animals depend on the plants in the rainforest biome for food and shelter. For example, squirrels live in the evergreen trees. Deer eat the berries that grow on bushes. The trees even make the oxygen that all animals need to breathe. Similarly, the animals make the carbon dioxide that the trees need to breathe.

There are thousands of creatures living in a tropical rainforest including butterflies, lizards, monkeys, snakes, and frogs. Many of these animals live in the trees of the rainforest. One adaptation that is common in a tropical rainforest is bright colors. Animals, like frogs, have bright colors to warn other animals to stay away because they are poisonous.
