Standardized Testing - Reading Practice - Civil War - Surprising Hero

1.50

It seems that every state now has an assessment that requires students to read a passage and answer questions about it. Some questions are multiple choice while others are short answer. This passage will be good practice for strong 5th grade readers through 10th graders. The more passages they experience, the easier the big test will be!

This passage is all about Robert Smalls, a largely unknown black hero from the Civil War. Smalls was conscripted into the Confederate army to pilot a wheel house ammunition ship along the Mississippi River. One night, he takes a chance and loads up the ship with his slave family members (among others). They pass by the Confederate batteries and make it to the Union navy. If you are doing a unit on the Civil War (or even if you aren't) this is a must read!
